The repeatable evening

Plan the friction out.
Leave the warmth in.

Use this timeline as a working run sheet. A regular game should become easier each time, not more elaborate.

01

One week before

Set the social contract

  • Confirm date, arrival time, and expected ending time
  • Name the American rules tradition and current card
  • Ask who is bringing the set and whether a beginner is joining
  • Collect dietary, mobility, hearing, or seating needs privately
02

One day before

Remove the room friction

  • Check table stability, four chairs, and sight lines
  • Choose food that can live away from the playing surface
  • Clear a side station for drinks, phones, and personal items
  • Confirm the guest count and cancellation plan
03

One hour before

Build the working table

  • Center the mat and place set, racks, pushers, dice, and cards
  • Test lighting from every seat
  • Set out water and refreshments at the side station
  • Place an empty tray nearby for the closing reset
04

Ten minutes before

Make arrival easy

  • Wash and dry hands
  • Lower music to conversation level
  • Clear decorative objects from elbow space
  • Open a clear path around all four chairs
05

As play begins

Name the pace

  • Introduce anyone new to the group
  • Confirm the version and any house practices
  • Tell beginners that questions are welcome
  • Agree on food breaks and the ending time
06

Before goodbye

Close the loop

  • Check the table and floor for tiles
  • Secure the set before clearing liquids
  • Confirm the next date and host
  • Move loose accessories into the reset tray

Make it portable

If another host could use the same plan, you have built a system.

Keep the timing, rules tradition, equipment responsibility, and beginner welcome consistent. Let each home vary the food and atmosphere.
